The Sugarlump Studio
Until September 2002, the Sugarlump studio recreated much loved characters from classic children's TV series, including Bagpuss, The Clangers, The Herbs, The Magic Roundabout, and Sooty and Friends.
The original of each piece was painstakingly modelled in artist's wax by Andrew Clark who, born in 1961, has remained a loyal fan of all children's classic television. It's his love of all those characters that inspired him to reproduce his favourites in miniature.
After each figurine was sculpted it went through a lengthy mould making process to ensure every detail of the original wax was copied exactly. This enabled the casting department to reproduce each piece in a hard version of Andrew's original. Once the cast piece had gone through a finishing process it then went on to be hand painted - this was the longest process of all (apart from the sculpting).
Mr MacHenry for example had 19 different colours, and even something as small as a Chive had 7 separate colours. A steady hand and good eyesight was a must while painting!
Because The Studio only had one person doing the sculpting and a small team of people casting, finishing, painting and packing they were very limited in the amount of pieces that were actually produced. This is why you didn't see them in every shop in every town!
The Sugarlump Studio Web Site
This web site was originally designed and built for The Sugarlump Studio by Adam Bull (Bodytronix), and first went live on the 13th of September 2000. Adam continued to maintain the site until the Studio closed in October 2002.
The site is now generously hosted by Christian Cundall and still maintained by Adam Bull as a service for fellow collectors of Sugarlump Studio Figures.
